Acupuncture Questions:

Does it hurt?

The needles used are so fine that only on rare occasions will a sensation be felt on the insertion of the needle. The needles are inserted to various depths, normally between 4 and 5 mm and when the point is reached a small ache or tingling sensation can sometimes be felt. Back to top

Is it Safe?

Acupuncture is a very safe treatment. The rules and regulations put in place by the governing bodies and the local government make sure that the highest level of hygiene and sterilisation are abided by at all times. All needles used are single use, pre-sterilised needles. Back to top

How often will I need to attend?

This will depend on what condition you are seeking treatment for, and how long you have had the condition. Chinese Medicine addresses each person as an individual and treatment for each individual will vary.  It is advised that initially you attend once a week, more if it is an acute problem, and as treatment progresses and you improve, you will need to attend less frequently. Although this is advised, I do understand the financial constraints of patients in the current climate, so treatment can be adapted to fit the situation of the patient. Back to top

Can children have treatment with acupuncture?

Yes. Acupuncture is an exceptionally good treatment for many childhood conditions. Children’s treatments are only half an hour maximum and are tailored to meet each child’s needs and their age. Children under the age of 16 will need to be accompanied by an adult for the whole treatment. For more information please have a look at the Childrens area of my website. - Children Back to top

Can I claim the cost of my treatment back?

Yes, in some cases. HSA and a few other medical insurance companies do cover treatment costs of acupuncture. Back to top

Sports Therapy and Massage:

Can Massage be harmful?

If used correctly and in the right circumstance then no. I am trained under strict guidelines and rules and because of this it takes away any risk. On a first appointment I do a full case history of a client’s health and circumstances. We are trained that under some health conditions, we may not massage unless previously advised by the clients doctor. A client’s health is always my first priority. Back to top

What is the difference between a sports massage and relaxation massage?

A sports massage is much deeper and involves a breaking down of knots and adhesions. This sometimes can result in a little pain at the time and also an achy feeling the day after, because of the removal of waste by the body.  A relaxation massage is a lot more relaxing, in that the strokes are not so heavy and are used to induce the muscles to relax without pain. The relaxation massage is for someone that just wants to unwind or de-stress, whereas the sports massage is more for someone carrying a lot of tension or aches, pains or injuries. Back to top

What can I do for myself and my injury while I am waiting for my appointment?

R.I.C.E. - which means:

  • Rest:- Rest as much as you can
  • Ice:- Ice the Injury 2 to 3 times a day if you can for 10-15 minutes
  • Compression:- Put a support on for compression to restrict the swelling
  • Elevation:- Elevate the injury above the level of the heart whenever you can, this will help to drain away any excess fluids and reduce the inflammation Back to top

I do a lot of sport, would it be beneficial to have a massage even though I do not have an injury?

Yes. Sports massage is very good as a prevention aswell as to help recovery. Massage helps to keep the muscles tension free and flexible, which then makes them less susceptible to injury. Back to top

Indian Head Massage:

Is the Indian Head massage fully clothed?

Yes. The treatment is performed sat up and relaxed in a chair. It is best to wear a loose t-shirt or shirt without collars. The massage consists of treatment to the top of the back, top of the arms, shoulders, neck, face and head. It is a lovely all round treatment and is very nice for those that are a bit fearful of taking any clothes off. Back to top

Hopi Ear Candles:

Are they safe?

The candles are made with a filter which stops any of the candles ash, or content entering the ear cavity. The way they work is so gentle that they cannot harm the ears. There is also strict guidelines for conditions which cannot be treated with ear candles, which I adhere to, so that harm cannot be caused. Back to top

How many treatments will I need?

This can vary depending on what you would like treatment for. Ear candles may need to be administered weekly or twice weekly if there is seriously compacted wax, for up to six weeks. Some patients also like to come monthly to keep their ears, or sinuses unblocked. Back to top
