Ear Candling or Thermal Auricular therapy as it is technically known, has been around for thousands of years. Although there is no evidence in text, there are representations dating back to 2500 B.C. There are references in the ancient Egyptian and Oriental Cultures but the most prominent evidence started with the Aztec and American Indian cultures.
In recent years Ear Candling has become a popular, modern choice of treatment for ear and ear related conditions. The most popular and best known candles are the Hopi Ear Candles, which originate from the Hopi Indians. The Hopi Ear Candles that I use are made by Biosun, more information can be found on their website www.biosun.com/english/.
What are they made of and how do they work?
The candles are as natural as possible, and consist of the following:
Pure line cloth
100% pure beeswax
Honey extracts
Sage - which is an anti-inflammatory and astringent herb
St Johns Wart - which is anti-inflammatory, astringent, relaxing and calming on the nervous system
Chamomile - which is anti-inflammatory, astringent, very calming and relaxing
Beta-Caroten (Vitamin A) - which helps to fight infection and strengthen the immune system
The candles work in a similar way to chimneys, the candle is lit and placed in the ear and the impurities are drawn to the surface by the airflow circulating in, around and out of the top of the candle.
A mild suction occurs and the heat of the released, circulating vapours (i.e. chamomile), inside the ear, gently massages the eardrum. This action helps to regulate the pressure systems within the head including the sinuses, which may be infected.
Both ears are treated separately and each ear takes between 10-15 minutes each. A facial massage is then given. The candles and massage can help in several ways including:
Herbal vapours soothe any irritated areas of the outer ear, and may help strengthen the immune system
The heat and the massage can help stimulate the blood flow, strengthen and increase the lymph glands, and stimulate energy points on the external part of the ear
The mild suction action of the candles can help regulate the pressure systems within the ear
